Gary Evans - Keyboards, harmonica, bass, vocals
Gary is always ready, willing & able to "get out & gig" with The Kootz! As a "youngblood" of the band, "Gary-The-Gig-Man" has found that there is much to learn what from what the veteran-Kootzmen are puttin' down... As amazed as he is at the vast repertoire & sheer range of The Kootz performances, he is also up to the task! Some even call Gary the official "utility-infielder" of the band... or even the "Substi-Koot"!
Gary started playing piano at a young age, since his father (Gary Sr.) was a piano teacher, school music instructor, owned a music studio in Montclair, NJ and played club-dates (weddings/banquets/jazz combos). Gary Jr. pretty much had no choice but to go into the "family business"... He tagged-along on dad's gigs and played keyboards, while Gary "Sr." cooled his heels. "Jr." also took guitar lessons, eventually picking up the bass guitar, so he'd always have a slot on dad's shows. Eventually "Pop's" cronies would call Gary on their own... to play bass as well as keys for their dates; Gary also brought some "youth" to the scene and was willing to sing those "rockin" hits of the day like "Bad Bad Leroy Brown", "Your Mama Don't Dance" and "Old Time Rock & Roll"!
A "rocker" at heart, Gary also has a penchant for R&B and soul-grooves... but "back in the day" he still harbored the burning desire to become a "rock & roller" like his idol, Billy Joel... In the 1980s while still in college at Rutgers, he did, however "relent", realizing that the weddings & banquets would yield a nice side-income... so he finally bought "the tux" and has been plugging-away ever since (on his third penguin-suit now and counting!). That Bachelor's degree in American Literature never quite got put to use... but "The Gig-Man" has been steadily-employed since 1997 as an IT Support person for the Pequannock Township School system, in northern NJ... a steady "daytime-gig" that Gary hopes to retire from someday... but not without a pension and a dental plan!
Deciding early-on that he wanted the stability of a family life, Gary has kept his musical career as an "avocation". He is married with a wonderful wife & two great kids as well as a dachsund pup named "Frankie"... His fantasy is to sleep for 24 hours-straight one day, without having to get up to walk the doggie, mow the lawn or even go to the store... for anything! Another lifelong wish is that someday... his boys will be old enough to help him load & unload his gig-gear from the house to the car!!!
Gary's current musical endeavors include performing with The "A" Band, where he has the pleasure of working with the "Grand Wizard" of the bass (and Koot) Gregg Hollister... as well as occasional appearances w/The Kootz and various other fill-ins.
Previously, Gary has also had the good-fortune to join forces - either as a member or a sideman with many (and we mean MANY!) regional-acts like Shotgun, Straight Shoot'r, The Mel Arnold, Alan Silver, Hank Joel, Jason Craig, Larry Ripley, Frank Glenn and Barry Herman Orchestras; Rio Clemente, Jam Sam'wich, Aurora, Mirage, Nick of Time, Fat Chance, The Wise Men, Cats On a Hot Tin Roof, The Vanguards, Visions, Band of Gold, Breeze, Sea of Love, Runaway, Ricochet, The Knockouts, Clueless Morgan, Split Decision, The StreetHearts, Krackerjax, RPM, The Hollywood Band, Arcaro, Broadway actress Rebecca Luker, Perfect Combination, The Robert Murdock Band, The New York Connection, Found Guilty, Groove, Soul Groove (w/Keith T. from The Kootz), The Jerzee Boys, Page 22, Joker's Wild, Saturday Nite Fever, The Moonlighters and The Moondogs (band & duo, w/ Ricky-O from The Kootz)! WHEW!
Catch "Gary-The-Gig-Man" soon; on a Kootz...well... GIG!
